About

App maker here. I built this because most flash card apps use cartoonish illustrations that don't help babies recognize real objects. This app lets you take photos of real things around the house or pick from curated real photo sets.Key features: • Take your own photos as flash cards • Record your own voice for each card • Pre-loaded kits with high-quality real photos and real animal sounds • Bilingual (English and Chinese) mode • Fully offline, no ads, no data collection • One-time purchase, no subscriptionHappy to answer questions or discuss the development process!

The distinction between illustrated and photographic flash cards is more nuanced than the premise suggests. Cartoon illustrations actually help with generalization, toddlers learn to recognize "dog" as a category rather than associating the word with one specific animal at one specific angle. Real photos introduce visual noise and context that can make categorization harder for developing brains. The custom photo approach has merit for objects the child encounters daily, since the matching between image and real-world referent is direct. Building out a full deck that way seems tedious though, and I wonder how many parents would actually follow through beyond the first dozen cards.

Love this approach! Cartoons had my kid expecting bananas to have faces at the grocery store 😅 Real photos just make sense.

smart angle on the real photos thing, cartoon flashcards always felt disconnected from actual object recognition. hoping the ui makes up for what will probably be some truly garbage parent photography tho
